Tehran is preparing to repel an attack from the United States, based on the fact that strikes are inevitable. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei gave orders in case of his death, writes The New York Times, citing sources and experts on Iran.
They note that Iran has learned lessons from Israel's surprise attack, and has issued clear directives to all security forces about blocking streets and searching for enemy agents.
In addition, military exercises were held, and missile launchers are now deployed along the western border to strike Israel, and along the Persian Gulf coast to strike American bases and the fleet.
At the same time, Ayatollah Khamenei ordered to develop an action plan in case of his death.
"Khamenei expects to become a martyr and thinks: this is my system and my legacy, and I will stand until the end. He distributes power and prepares the state for the next important event — both the succession to the throne and the war, realizing that the succession to the throne can be a consequence of the war," said Vali Nasr, an expert on Iran.
Khamenei also delegated part of his powers to his closest associates, who should identify up to four possible deputies in case of his death or abduction.
At the same time, the key role in the system of power, according to the publication, is now played by the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani.
He oversees internal security issues, contacts with allies and participates in negotiations with Washington on the nuclear program, and in the event of a war, he is tasked with coordinating the country's governance.
