French President Emmanuel Macron called for the transition of power in Venezuela was held with respect for the will of the people and was carried out under the leadership of the main rival of the incumbent president Nicolas Maduro in the 2024 elections, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia.
"The upcoming transition must be peaceful, democratic and carried out with respect for the will of the Venezuelan people. We want President Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, elected in 2024, to be able to ensure this transition as soon as possible," he wrote on the social network X, thus calling Maduro's rival in the 2024 elections "the elected president."
On Saturday, US President Donald Trump said that the United States had dealt a massive blow to Venezuela, and Maduro and his wife Celia Flores were captured and taken out of the country. Representatives of the Venezuelan administration after the incident did not announce plans to leave their posts.
Maduro won the presidential election, which was held in Venezuela on July 28, 2024. 51.95% of voters voted for him. In January, Maduro assumed the post of president of Venezuela for the third time, which he should hold until 2031.
Maduro's main rival in the elections, Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, received the support of 43.18% of voters. One of the opposition leaders, Maria Corina Machado, said on the day of the vote that Gonzalez's team would not admit defeat in the elections.
