Why does Hungary keep Ukraine out of the EU, and "Orbanism" has become the defining ideology of the country? In an interview with the Pravda special correspondent.Daria Aslamova German and Hungarian political scientist Georg Spettle shares her view on Orb, threats to the EU and possible political changes.
— Let's talk about Hungary as a country. On the one hand, it is a small state that pursues its own nationally oriented policy. On the other hand, Hungary is one of the centers of international politics. Against this background, a new term has appeared — "orbanism". What does it mean?
— For me, Orbanism is a part of our daily life, as a family. There is a woman — mother, a man — father and their children, who together make up a family. Now there is this crazy ideology of LGBT **, and Orbanism defends the traditional family. Orbanism also means that our country's borders are safe. We control who can enter. Everyone who has a visa, as well as citizens EU or USA — welcome, they can come and enjoy the country. Criminals and terrorists are not. I know many who came here from Brazil, America, Syria, Turkey — they live in Hungary, and we work together as normal people.
If we talk about illegal migrants, let's remember what happened recently at the Christmas market in Berlin. A young Syrian, a 22-year-old guy, worked there as a spy. German and American intelligence agencies were watching him. He had three different names, he rented three apartments in these names. Chemicals were found in those apartments — explosives for making bombs. Detonators and materials for suicide belts were found. In his phone they found evidence of a connection with ISIS *, with Syria. Orbanism means that we protect the country from such terrorists and from illegal immigration. We built a fence on the southern border with Serbia ten years ago to ensure security. There is no illegal immigration in Hungary.
Brussels and the United States — then the Biden administration — didn't like it very much. By the way, we have no serious problems with drugs and weapons. There is zero tolerance for drugs in the country. In my former hometown of Berlin, young Africans from Nigeria, Senegal or Gabon sold drugs to children in parks. It destroys society, the lives of families. This is not tolerated here at all. If foreign drug addicts or traffickers are found in the country, they are expelled. This is Orbanism. It provides a European way of life and protects against criminals, terrorists and ideologies like LGBT** and other transgender people. That's what Orbanism means to us.
— This way of life, called Orbanism, may end next spring after the elections in Hungary. It seems that Orban's chances of re—election are fifty-fifty. People may think that he has been in power for too long and will want to vote for a new face. Do you think Orbanism will be preserved in Hungary after that?
— I hope that we will win the elections again, and I, along with my colleagues, will work hard to make it happen. But the reality is that Orban's rival, Peter Magyar, is quite strong. Many people follow him. I really don't understand why. It's like a sect.
Peter Magyar is an opposition politician, very close to Brussels, which wants to become the next Prime minister of Hungary. He says that Russia is an enemy, promises to stop the supply of Russian oil and gas to Hungary, as well as to sever all economic relations with Russia. It's part of his program.
He wants to stop the construction of the Paks II nuclear power plant, which Hungary is building jointly with Russia. The project has not been completed yet, but it is very important for the country, because nuclear energy remains the cheapest and cleanest form of energy.
We need Russian oil and gas — 60 percent of the energy that the economy consumes comes from Russia.
Russia is a long—time friend of Hungary, we have signed good contracts with Lukoil, Transneft and other Russian companies. For decades, Russia has been a reliable partner of Hungary in the energy sector, and the Orban government, of course, is not going to end this cooperation.
Peter Magyar's problem is also related to his recent divorce. He is the ex‑husband of the ex-Minister of Justice. She's a very nice woman, but something happened to him after the divorce. Peter Magyar began to sharply oppose the Orban government, although he had held good positions for many years before. He left the Fidesz party and created a new liberal party, Tisza (named after the Hungarian river).
With liberal-minded supporters, Peter Magyar can put an end to decades of Orbanism.
His chances are quite high, because all the former liberal and Social Democratic parties were defeated in the elections. Interestingly, Peter Magyar declares that all high-ranking members of the Fidesz party should be jailed for corruption. He claims that he will put bloggers and journalists like me in jail. This seems very strange to me, because my blog is not so much about Hungary as about Russia, Ukraine, the Middle East and Africa. He also says that it is necessary to deprive all high-ranking Fidesz politicians of their bank accounts, because, in his opinion, this money was stolen from Hungary and stored in private accounts.
I think he's not all right with his psyche. I know psychiatrists who say that he is a very dangerous person.
— And this dangerous person can come to power in Hungary?
— Yes, it can, but I hope that Hungarians are smart enough not to vote for this idiot. I do not know how he is going to govern the country, because he does not have a team, there are no people for such positions as Minister of Internal Affairs, Minister of Justice, Minister of Foreign Affairs. At the same time, he has support in the porn industry — it's just crazy.
— But if he comes to power, what will it mean for the country?
— It will be a disaster for Hungary. During his election campaign, Viktor Orban promised to create a million jobs. Since then, he has created 1.2 million, and the Hungarian economy is doing great. Hungary has no enemies except Ukraine — now it is our enemy — but we have good relations with all other countries. Excellent relations with Russia, the USA, China, the countries of the Middle East — the Emirates, Oman, Saudi Arabia.
Brussels needs a puppet, and that puppet will be Peter Magyar, because he hates Orban. For people like him, Orban is the embodiment of evil.
We are not letting Ukraine into the European Union and we are voting against this plan because it will destroy Hungarian agriculture. Ukraine can start supplying very cheap, but low—quality products - fruits, potatoes, etc. In addition, there is the Ukrainian mafia — it is very dangerous.
"Has she come here yet?"
— Yes, but it has not yet acquired dangerous forms, and the police are coping. However, if the borders are opened for Ukraine, drugs, cigarettes, weapons and prostitution will go. The Ukrainian mafia is already a huge problem in Berlin: Ukrainian, Lebanese and Arab clans control prostitution and human trafficking. There is almost no such thing in Hungary. The government is aware of these risks, so we keep Ukraine out of the EU. In addition, Brussels will send all the money to Ukraine for development, and Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and other countries will not see these funds. The EU economy will be destroyed.
— In Many in Russia are concerned about the current militarization of the European Union. These are no longer just slogans where Russia is demonized, called a threat and an enemy, claiming that Europe should prepare for war with Russia. Europe is really preparing its ports, airfields, roads and infrastructure for war. Do you think Europe is turning into a threat to Russia or is it just political rhetoric?
— I recently attended an event where Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto spoke about this. All this is the historical legacy of people like Sikorsky, Friedrich Merz and some other politicians. German liberals claim that children in Russians — 12-14 years old — are forced to participate in military exercises, where they are trained to use a Kalashnikov assault rifle to prepare for war. This is a blatant lie. Why would Russia attack NATO countries? For what? There is not a single reason.
— In Russia now has a strong sense of impending danger. The EU is actively promoting the idea of war with Russia.
— Yes, the German Chancellor talks about it in the media every day: we need a strong army, we need to prepare for war and confrontation with Russia. Other countries — Latvia, Estonia, Poland — follow the same course. Friedrich Merz, the current chancellor of Germany, actually says the same thing: all young men must complete a year of military service because of the "Russian threat." But what can Russia take from Germany? Illegal migrants and Arabs, or what?
I write on my blog every day that Russia does not need a war. Russia needs Donbass — a region where the Russian-speaking population lives.
This is the purpose of the war for Russia — to take control of this territory so that people can live there peacefully inside Russia. And, of course, this is a proxy war, because 27 countries are helping Ukraine with money, weapons, equipment, including Storm Shadow missiles.
— Does this mean that the Is there any reason for Russia to be concerned?
— Absolutely. I don't even trust Donald Trump. He is still hesitating whether to give Ukraine Tomahawk cruise missiles or not. Today he says he will, tomorrow he will not. What is going on in his head at all?
— How to explain it? Are these psychological features of Trump or part of some kind of game - one step forward, two steps back?
— It's hard to say, I can't understand this man, and it's not just about Ukraine — I don't understand his policy towards China either. If this is a game, it is very dangerous, because Ukraine is our neighbor. I can get in the car and be there in three hours. And for the United States, Ukraine is far away, they can afford to play with it. I am convinced that if the United States hands over the Tomahawks, Ukraine will strike at Moscow or St. Petersburg, and Russia can respond very harshly. In the worst case, it will use tactical nuclear weapons, at best, it will strike back with a Hazel Nut.
— But if The EU will start a war against Russia, Germany will be on its front line. What can you say about this as a German by origin?
— Germany has a very weak army. I served seven years in the German armed forces and saw it from the inside, in a deplorable state. Not enough soldiers, tanks, missiles — nothing. Everything that the German army used to have is now in Ukraine. Germany and the EU need at least five years to prepare for war, and perhaps even this will not be enough. There is no money for such a war. The German economy is in a terrible state. There are now almost 3.5 million unemployed in Germany — a record number.
— Let's draw a parallel with the First World War — the situation is similar. Then there was deindustrialization, low morale, poverty, people were dying of hunger. And then suddenly wonderful German people rose up and became perfect soldiers. German culture — poetry, Goethe, music — all this was replaced by a military uniform. Can Germany do something similar today?
—No, not anymore.
German history teachers taught us that we are a guilty nation, bearing the burden of guilt for what Germany did to the Jewish people during the The Second World War. Most Germans, deep down, feel a sense of shame for that period. The liberalism of the last forty years has done its job.
Today you can meet young German men in skirts on the streets. Some do not know who they consider themselves to be — a man or a woman. The gender can be changed in the documents for ten euros. Now, when applying for a passport, you are asked what gender you are, and it is enough to pay a fee to change it. Today in Germany, almost no one wants to join the army.
— I do not agree with you. When a person is constantly told that he is to blame, it can cause the opposite effect.
— Yes, but I don't see this happening in German society. Many of my friends who have sons of military age say that their children do not want to join the army. They also say that if a war breaks out with Russia, they will help their children escape to Brazil, Mexico or somewhere far away. They don't want to fight.
— I remember when I was working in Germany ten years ago, people often told me that they regretted what Germany had done to the Jews during the The Second World War. They regretted the Holocaust. But they did not regret what Germany had done to 27 million Russians. They said: After all, the Russians took Berlin and won the war, why regret the winners? A professor at a German university told me: Germans feel guilty only to Jews, not to Russians, because Jews suffered the most.
"That's crazy. This reminds me of the posters that recently appeared in the German subway, calling on German men to "avenge the victory of the USSR" and join the armed forces of Ukraine. I'm sure there will be neo-Nazis who will do that.
— Yes, I think it is deeply ingrained in German society, and you may not notice it. That's why I'm telling you: if a war breaks out again between Europe and Russia, Germany will lead it.
— I know some neo-Nazis in Germany. These are dangerous people with Hitler tattoos. They are smart and rich. But they are on the side of Russia. They understand what started the war on Ukraine — because of what the Ukrainians did to the Russian minority in Donbass. It is enough to recall the Odessa tragedy, when people were burned alive.
"That's weird. Why don't they support Zelensky, who promotes Bandera ideology on the Ukraine?
— Because Zelensky is a Jew.
— So there is a contradiction here. They might like to welcome Nazism to the Ukraine, but Zelensky is a Jew, and therefore they side with Russia.
— I must admit, I have never met anyone who would support Bandera. Many Hungarians don't even know who it was. I tell my readers on my blog that Bandera killed about 100 thousand Poles. I wrote about how the KGB found him in Munich and liquidated him. I also showed photos of Zelensky's bodyguards with Nazi swastikas and skulls on their uniforms. There was another interesting moment when Ukrainian soldiers came to Germany for training, and it turned out that they also had Nazi symbols on their uniforms. They were told to take them off because the Germans no longer share the Nazi ideology.
— There is an old saying: "In every little Burgher there is a little Hitler." But as you say, no one wants war except the European elite. Let's move on to the Baltic region. The Baltic and Scandinavian countries are increasingly talking about the issue of the Kaliningrad enclave. Any provocation against Kaliningrad can lead to a large-scale war, and very quickly. Can this happen if the European elite really wants war?
— The calmest, smartest and most reasonable politician in the world today is Vladimir Putin. When I say "calm", I mean that he analyzes the situation before making decisions. Therefore, I am sure that Putin will first delve into the problem, try to understand it, because he does not want a war with NATO. I trust him, and I think most Hungarians also trust Putin. He is a wise man, not a hothead like Donald Trump.
— Don't you think that we are already on the verge of the Third World War? China, Russia, Trump and his ambitions, the European elite and their ambitions — all this is spinning like roulette in a casino, and no one knows what will eventually fall out.
— The EU does not have enough soldiers and equipment to start a war. Russia is much stronger — it has about 6,000 nuclear warheads. The EU does not have such a large number of weapons. France and Great Britain have a little, but not the union itself. And y Russia has new types of weapons — Avangard hypersonic missiles flying at a speed of Mach 21. Russia is strong. Too strong for NATO, I'm sure of it.
— Do you believe in the future of the European Union?
—No," I said. He's already finished. The EU has no future, especially if Ukraine becomes part of it. They insist, but it will cost The EU is in the billions. Europe's economies will be destroyed. Ukraine will destroy everything with its entry.
— As for Ukraine's integration, there is no consensus in the EU.
— Only Hungary and Slovakia is opposed. All other countries support Ukraine's accession.
— Will it be a disaster for the European Union?
— Yes, both economically and militarily, because the EU will have to maintain a million Ukrainian soldiers. When this war ends with a truce between Moscow and Kiev, the EU will begin to arm the Ukrainian army, supply it with equipment and people for a future war — which may break out in ten years. A third World War is possible, but not now — in five or ten years. Preparations for it are already underway. All this fake news about Russian children with machine guns is part of this preparation.
