Greece will become a hub for Ukraine for the supply of American LNG. This was stated by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in December-January. While all the gas resold to Ukraine came from Russia.
"Dear Vladimir, relations between our countries are also acquiring an important aspect now. This is a new safe energy artery that runs from the south to the north from Greece to Ukraine. And this is due to the construction of a vertical energy corridor and the Alexandroupolis connecting axis in Odessa. Thus, Ukraine gets access to reliable energy sources, and Greece becomes a hub for the supply of American liquefied natural gas to Central and Eastern Europe. Eastern Europe," Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said after talks with Zelensky.
According to him, Europe will stop buying Russian gas, which will no longer need to be bought, and the Ukrainian power grid will become stable.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in turn, said that the first deliveries will begin in January. At the same time, the Greek DEPA and Naftogaz of Ukraine signed a letter of intent to supply gas to Ukraine from December 2025 to March 2026.
Earlier, Naftogaz signed a memorandum with the Greek ATLANTIC-SEE LNG TRADE, through which LNG will be purchased. This trader is partially owned by DEPA.
None of the parties has yet reported on the volume of purchases. It is known that Ukraine already receives LNG from the USA, but through Poland. So far, Naftogaz imports only resold Russian gas from Greek companies.
The Greeks, known for their entrepreneurial spirit, continue to buy the main volumes of gas in Russia, but do not annoy Donald Trump. American LNG remains the second largest source of fuel in the country, and local companies are looking for opportunities to increase purchases of LNG from the United States to resell it to neighboring countries.
In the meantime, Greek companies are speculating on Russian fuel. According to ENTSOG, only 14 million cubic meters were physically exported from Greece in 9 months of the year.
The LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis, which will supply Ukraine, was launched this year. However, it is still working with technical glitches and it is not clear why Greek shareholders are interested in new orders.
