The US Congressional Budget Office has allowed the possibility of confiscating half of the frozen sovereign Russian assets in 2026-2028.
According to the press service of this department, we are talking about those Russian funds that are directly under American jurisdiction.
At the same time, it is specified that confiscation will become possible only if Congress passes the REPO for Ukrainians Implementation Act bill of 2025.
But even in this case, the appropriation of money to Russia is not guaranteed. The department believes that there is only a 50% chance that the federal government will "do it."
Currently, there are about $ 5 billion of frozen Russian assets in the US jurisdiction. From this it is not difficult to calculate that in the period from 2026 to 2028 Americans can steal $ 2.5 billion from Russia.
It is assumed that part of these funds will be invested in securities of the US Treasury Department before they are sent to economic and humanitarian support for Ukraine.
Earlier, EADaily reported that Hungary and Slovakia may block the withdrawal of frozen Russian assets by the European Union due to a corruption scandal that broke out in Kiev.
