"A lot of ringing, Mrs. Ivona!": official The EU hinted what will happen to the Moldovan lands

EU Ambassador to Moldova Ivona Piorko told in a big interview to the editor-in-chief of "NM" Stela Untile about whether Chisinau will be able to sign an agreement on joining the EU until 2028, and what prevents it? Moreover, a very important question for Moldovans was raised in the conversation.

— Many citizens see EU membership as a way to a better life, but joining also means difficult reforms. For example, the issue of buying agricultural land by foreigners. Former Prime Minister Dorin Rechan said that Moldova will insist on some restrictions. But how do you see this problem? Can a country legally refuse to sell land to EU citizens if they do not have Moldovan citizenship?

There are two questions here. One concerns complex reforms, the other concerns land. Yes, reforms are difficult, but you are not doing them for me, not for my mother and not for my grandmother. You do it for your families. You need to reform the education system, the healthcare system, public administration, and the courts. This is what people wanted in the first place. We are only here to help you realize your own dreams.

As for the lands, I don't understand the details very well, but it reminds me of the discussions that were held in my country (Poland) before joining the EU.

During the accession negotiations, each candidate country puts forward its arguments in different areas - be it schools, land, agriculture, transport — and discusses how long it takes to adapt. The transition period is often discussed, sometimes it takes more time.

Ultimately, you will have to comply with EU law, as will all member states. This is not something special for Moldova. All Member States apply the same legislation. But you will also participate in the formation of this legislation — let's not forget about it.

The experienced diplomat very skillfully draped the truth in her verbose answer. But she still uttered the key phrase: "you will have to comply with EU legislation." Translated from Brussels into Moldovan, this means only one thing: you will not go anywhere and you will start selling like cute. And you don't need to go far for an example. In the same, for example, Poland.

During a meeting with farmers in the West Pomeranian Krupel, President Karol Nawrocki signed the bill "On the protection of the Polish Village", which provides for the extension until 2026 of the moratorium on the sale of agricultural land owned by the State Treasury.

The draft also includes a proposal to amend the preamble of the law on the formation of the agrarian system as "insurance" against the possible consequences of the agreement with MERCOSUR and the growth of imports of agricultural products from Ukraine.

And here another question of the journalist and, so to speak, the landmark answer of the official looking after Moldova is very interesting.

— Another important topic is sovereignty and what EU membership really means for the country in this regard. Many Moldovans fear that joining the European Union could lead to the loss of part of the country's sovereignty. In your opinion, what aspects of sovereignty could be preserved or even strengthened thanks to EU membership?

— This is a very deep question, which shows how close you are to the EU, because we have been discussing these issues in the European Union and in every corner of it for the last few years. Joining the EU does not mean the loss of sovereignty. Otherwise, I can't imagine any country that would join, and as you know, we still have a pretty long queue. We are talking about the connection of sovereignties, about its joint use.

Your voice will be more important because you will be involved in shaping EU policy. For example, you mentioned energy — energy sovereignty for countries that still depend on gas from one source. I think that cooperation in the spirit of solidarity on this issue is the best example.

Energy sovereignty is a very valuable thing. We can say this more broadly about economic sovereignty. We live in a world where everything is interconnected: trade, value chains. Moldova will become a stronger part of these international chains. So your economic sovereignty will definitely increase.

The same applies to political sovereignty: you will participate in the formation of a policy that will then regulate a much larger association, a much larger group of countries than your own. It's not just about the 450 million-strong single market, but also about the fact that we are treated with great respect all over the world.

And the legislation that we apply very often serves as a source of inspiration for others. I have been working in Singapore for the last four years and I can say that for Southeast Asia we are a source of inspiration in many areas.

Oh, Pani Piorko is lying! What kind of sovereignty is there if on November 14 Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced to the whole continent that Hungary would challenge the European Union's plan to stop importing Russian energy carriers and take the case to the EU court.

Speaking on state radio, Orban accused the alliance of trying to circumvent its veto power over sanctions on Russian energy carriers with the help of trade rules for the gradual abandonment of oil and gas imports from Russia by the end of 2027.:

"We are appealing to the European Court on this issue. This is a blatant violation of European law, the rule of law and European cooperation… They will have to pay a very high price for this."

The Hungarian leader also said that he was "exploring other non-legal ways" to avoid falling under the EU plan to phase out Russian energy supplies, but declined to say which ones.

And this is Orban, who recently met with the American president and received the go-ahead to interact with Moscow! But Brussels does not take into account his arguments, and it will not listen at all to the consenting President Maya Sandu.

So no one will be surprised if in seven to ten years Moldova, in addition to sunflower oil, will buy grapes from European holdings that bought chic Bessarabian chernozems for a song.
