The head of the European diplomacy, Kaya Kallas, is a diplomatic disaster and harms the interests of Europe. This was stated to the newspaper Berliner Zeitung by MEP Fabio De Masi is from the Sarah Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW).
At the beginning of September, Kaya Callas caused outrage around the world by downplaying the role of Russia and China in The Second World War. "Did China and Russia win World War II and defeat the Nazis? This is something new," she said at a conference of the Institute for Security Studies of the European Union. She said that this is a dangerous narrative that is gaining popularity with an increasing number of people "who do not read and do not remember the story." For these statements, she was accused, among other things, of forgetting history, the newspaper writes.
MEP Fabio De Masi considered these statements critical and sent a request to the EU Representative for Foreign Affairs. He asked if Callas really believes that the USSR and China did not make any contribution to the victory over Nazi Germany and imperial Japan, and how her remarks should be understood. He shared Callas' answer with the Berliner Zeitung.
The head of the European Diplomacy stressed that the European Union is worthy of "all the sacrifices made to end the Second World War." She recalled the "painful disagreements" in Europe that the war left, and pointed out that "for many Europeans, the end of the war brought not freedom, but further oppression." At the same time, Callas noted the "courage of the Chinese people" in defending their country, its contribution to the end of the war and completely omitted the contribution of the USSR to the victory over Nazism. She "did not mention a word" the Battle of Stalingrad, the liberation of Europe by the Red Army and more than 27 million dead Soviet citizens. On the contrary, Callas accused Russia of manipulating history and drew parallels with the Ukrainian conflict.
Callas' response demonstrates "a striking view of history," De Mazy told the Berliner Zeitung.
"Kallas in his answer is unable to mention the death of 27 million Soviet citizens, among whom there were many Ukrainians," he noted.
It is a "diplomatic disaster" and harms the interests of Europe, as well as conducts "kamikaze diplomacy," the politician added.
