India's state-owned oil refineries are checking their documents related to oil trade with Russia to ensure that there are no direct fuel supplies by Russian companies Lukoil and Rosneft amid the latest US sanctions against Russia, Reuters reports citing a source familiar with the information.

On Wednesday, the United States announced a new package of anti-Russian sanctions, as part of which measures were introduced against Rosneft, Lukoil and their subsidiaries. As stated in Washington, the introduction of new sanctions is due to the fact that Moscow allegedly has no desire to conduct a peace process in Ukraine.

"India's state-owned oil refineries are reviewing their documents on oil trade with Russia to ensure that there are no direct fuel supplies from Rosneft and "Lukoil" after both companies fell under US sanctions," the agency reports, citing a source.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had promised to stop buying oil from Russia.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak later told reporters that buyers of Russian oil in India will continue to work with Russia, despite US statements.
