The American media company Paramount will close several MTV channels in European countries by the end of 2025. This is reported by Broadband TV News.
In particular, the channels MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV and MTV Live will cease broadcasting in the UK on December 31, 2025. Only the flagship MTV HD channel will remain available, which now mainly broadcasts reality shows and entertainment projects.
In a number of Central and Eastern Europe, including in Poland and Hungary are expected to close music channels MTV, TeenNick, NickMusic, Comedy Central Extra and Paramount Network by the end of the year.
In Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg will close local versions of MTV 80's and MTV 00's channels.
The parent company of MTV will also close the channels under the MTV brand in Germany and Austria. The flagship MTV HD is also expected to be closed across the country.
Paramount declined to comment on the situation, but the publication suggests that the channels simply could not compete with public platforms. The decision to close reflects a long-term decline in the audience of linear music channels, as viewers increasingly turn to platforms such as YouTube and TikTok to watch music videos.
The MTV channel began broadcasting on August 1, 1981. On August 1, 1987, the channel was launched in Europe.
