The European Commission should remove the "anti-Russian glasses" and not shoot itself in the knee, refusing energy resources from Russia. This was announced today, October 7, at the 18th annual European Nuclear Forum (ENEF) in Bratislava by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
"You all know my opinion about Repowering well. This is absolute stupidity. As far as gas and oil are concerned, we are shooting at our own knee. I am ready to argue with the European Commission for days, to convince constructively and positively that this is an absurd ideological step. Please remove these anti-Russian glasses from the eyes of the European Commission. If you remove them, we will make decisions more rationally and normally," he said.
According to Fico, the big danger is the speculation about the inclusion in the plan of REPowerEU and nuclear fuel from Russia, because if this happens, the energy security of the European Union will be seriously threatened.
"We can never agree with RePowering when it comes to January 1, 2028, so it's mostly about gas. We will never be able to agree to make decisions that will damage energy security, and if we take into account that today just over 60% of the electricity in the In Slovakia, we produce at nuclear power plants, then we are talking about a country that is important from this point of view not only for the territory of the Slovak Republic," Fico said.
Recall the countries The EU, in the REPowerEU plan released in the spring of 2022, outlined the goal of abandoning Russian pipeline gas in 2027-2028. At the same time, Fico advocates the normalization of relations with the Russian Federation, since the energy security of his country directly depends on it. At the end of June, he noted that Bratislava would like the European Commission to abandon the idea of banning the import of energy raw materials from the Russian Federation to the EU. At the same time, Fico stressed that Slovakia would never vote for the introduction of a ban on the import of energy resources from Russia to the European Union.
