Rosneft and American Exxon Mobil signed a non-binding initial agreement so that the US oil giant could recover the loss of assets in Russia, which are estimated at $ 4.6 billion.
"The agreement marks a preliminary step towards the restoration of commercial relations between the two countries," Reuters reports, citing sources.
Rosneft did not confirm the information to the agency.
"New agreement with "Rosneft"sets the conditions for negotiations that could lead to Exxon reimbursing the $4.6 billion write—down, and is not legally binding," Reuters writes.
Exxon Mobil's main project in Russia had a Sakhalin—1 oil production project, in which the American company had 30%. In 2022, the energy giant announced its withdrawal and lost $ 4.6 billion.
Exxon Mobil CEO Darren Woods told the agency that the company has been negotiating since 2023, as it received permission for them under the administrations of US President Donald Trump and former President Joe Biden.
There was a lot of talk on the market that the American company could return to Russia, but so far Exxon has announced a desire to compensate for losses. Exxon estimated that the departure from Russia has closed access to 150 million barrels of proven oil equivalent reserves.
