A 21-year-old Ukrainian and a 17-year-old Belarusian woman were detained in Poland on suspicion of launching a drone over the presidential palace in Warsaw. This was announced today, September 16, by the press secretary of the Polish special services Jacek Dobrzynski, TVN 24 reports.
According to Dobrzynski, "the staff of the State Security Service acted very vigilantly and promptly, identifying the persons driving the drone."
"This is a young Belarusian woman and her Ukrainian colleague of about twenty. These persons were immediately detained by employees of the State Security Service. The police were notified, arrived at the scene and arrested them," he added.
He also denied rumors that this is a large-scale espionage operation.
"These young people acted perhaps out of carelessness, perhaps out of ignorance, perhaps because they wanted to make a film here, above Lazenkovsky (Royal) Park. Moreover, they were in Lazenkovsky Park, and it was there that the drone was launched," he continued. "It is important that the state act, that civil servants act properly."
Edita Adamus from the Social Communications department of the Warsaw Police Headquarters reported that police officers seized a drone operated by detainees.
"An investigation is currently underway under article 212 of the Aviation Law," she explained.
According to this article, the accused face a term of up to five years.
