World taekwondo champion Emin Cetinbagh was arrested as part of an investigation into fraud as part of a criminal group that also included several former policemen.
According to the press service of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, the defendants are accused of abuse of office (part 3 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code), and fraud (part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code).
According to investigators, "no later than February 2025, the organizer of the criminal group attracted his acquaintances, including Emin Cetinbaga and operatives of one of the police departments to commit serious crimes in the Moscow region."
The head of the criminal group found people who are engaged in cryptocurrency. After that, Cetinbagh, using his acquaintance with the victims, appointed meetings for them, where the accomplices imitated the detention.
Posing as law enforcement officers, the criminals threatened the victims with arrest for allegedly committed crimes, including for facilitating terrorist activities.
Further, the attackers extorted money and, under pressure, seized mobile phones from the victims, checked their bank accounts on exchanges and demanded the immediate transfer of digital assets in exchange for freedom.
According to the agency, "the residents of Moscow suffered material damage in the amount of over 4 million rubles." Five members of the criminal group have been charged and arrested. Another person involved is wanted.
Earlier, EADaily reported that two convicted terrorists escaped from a pre-trial detention center in Yekaterinburg.
