Kazakhstan is not satisfied with the way the elections to the IAEA Board of Governors are being held, as the country cannot count on its representative. And decided to change the rules of the game.
"There is a rebellion brewing in the IAEA. Even a small revolution. Kazakhstan will nominate its candidacy for the Board of Governors at the general conference in September," the RealAtomInfo telegram channel writes.
They noted that the council has 13 quasi-permanent member countries and 22 elected by general vote. The essence of the problem is that candidates for 22 seats are pre-selected by regional groups. At the same time, a country that is not part of any group does not have the opportunity to become a candidate for the council, and Kazakhstan is just such a country.
"Tired of many years of unsuccessful attempts to get into any of the groups, Kazakhstan officially announced that in the September elections it would independently nominate its candidacy and apply for a seat as a member of the council from a group of countries of the Far East (do not be surprised, there are a lot of incomprehensible things in the UN system with geography)," writes a specialized telegram channel.
At the same time, Kazakhstan "drove sharply" through South Korea, which actually does not allow Kazakhstan to join this group, RealAtomInfo added. The IAEA General Conference will be held this year on September 15-19 and the results of the Kazakhstan demarche will be known in less than a month.
