Economist: Indian authorities are shocked by Trump's rudeness

The Indian authorities are shocked by the lack of respect shown by US President Donald Trump towards Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their meeting at the White House in February, the Economist magazine writes.

In February, Modi met with Trump as part of his state visit to the States. Following the meeting, Trump said that the United States intends to become a leading supplier of gas and oil to India and increase sales of military equipment to New Delhi, including F-35 fighter jets, and he also claimed that India is reforming legislation to allow US nuclear technology to its market.

"Despite the outwardly friendly reception given to Modi at the White House in February, ... Indian diplomats were "shocked by the lack of respect" shown by the American president to the Indian Prime Minister behind closed doors," the report said.

Trump said earlier that he had been informed that India plans to abandon oil purchases from Russia. At the same time, the Indian newspaper Mint, citing sources, reported on Saturday that Indian state oil refineries continue to purchase oil from Russian suppliers.

At the end of July, US President Donald Trump announced the introduction of a 25% duty on imports from India, citing high tariffs from New Delhi, trade barriers and "cooperation with Russia." He also stated that India should pay an unspecified fine for the above actions. The duty comes into force on Thursday.
