Rotation of senators in The Federation Council will be held after the September elections in the regions, 32 senators are "at risk" in terms of reassignment. This was stated at a press conference by the Chairman of the Federation Council of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko.
"We have [in September] 21 election campaigns for the election of heads of regions and 11 elections of regional parliaments. That is, 32 senators are at risk. Will they receive confirmation from delegates under the Constitution of the Russian Federation — from the governor or from the regional parliament — or will there be a replacement. As you already know very well, it is absolutely the prerogative of the governor to make a decision — to keep the current senator or replace him, and it is also the prerogative of the regional parliament," she said, quoted by TASS.
According to Matvienko, as the practice of recent elections shows, the turnover of senators ranges from 30% to 50%.
"And this is a very good practice, established. Phased rotation, replacement of senators. As I have said many times, new people come with fresh thoughts, ideas, charged to work. Therefore, this time, of course, there will be a change of some senators, including, as you said, prominent politicians. Nothing stands still. But we will find out for sure after a single day of voting. We are always ready to receive our new colleagues in the upper house," she said.
