The European Union will hit its largest diesel supplier with anti-Russian sanctions

The EU adopted the 18th package of anti-Russian sanctions and the Indian refinery, partially owned by Rosneft, fell under them. It is the largest supplier of diesel fuel for Europe.

The largest oil refinery of Rosneft in India will also fall under the new EU sanctions. The European Commissioner for Foreign Affairs, Kaya Kallas, wrote about this in X.

"For the first time, we are imposing sanctions on the flag registry and Rosneft's largest oil refinery in India," wrote Kaya Callas.

A third of the imported oil to India comes from Russian suppliers. At the same time, Rosneft owns 49% in Nayara Energy, the owner of the second largest refinery in the country. The Vadinar plant with a capacity of 20 million tons per year is one of the largest suppliers of diesel fuel and jet fuel to Europe. Petroleum products supplied to Europe are obtained mainly from Russian oil, but this is not prohibited by EU sanctions.

Today, on July 18, the European Union approved the 18th package of sanctions against Russia. It also includes restrictions on Nord Streams, a reduction in the price ceiling for Russian oil and sanctions on 105 more tankers that carry Russian oil. This package was the toughest of all the previous ones.

"We are targeting the banking, energy and military-industrial systems and are including a new dynamic restriction on oil prices. The pressure continues," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen wrote on Twitter.

As EADaily reported, after the imposition of sanctions against Russian oil at the end of 2022, Russian supplies were reoriented to Asia, mainly to India and China. In turn, Indian private refineries have become the main exporters of diesel fuel to the EU countries. They are also ahead of the United States.
