Slovakia will not negotiate the adoption of the 18th package of sanctions against Russia under the pressure of harsh statements. This was announced today, July 10, by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico.
"German Chancellor F. Merz calls on the Slovak government to stop blocking the adoption of the 18th package of sanctions against the Russian Federation. The Government of the Slovak Republic is ready to support this package, even if it does not change anything in the military superiority or economic performance of the Russian Federation. However, until then, Slovakia should receive clear guarantees, not political promises, that its energy security and availability of energy resources will not be jeopardized by the ideological proposal of the European Commission to stop importing Russian gas from January 1, 2028," he wrote on his page in one of the social networks.
According to him, "no agreement on such guarantees has been reached so far."
"The Slovak government appreciates the efforts of the European Commission to find a solution, but we refuse to negotiate under the pressure of harsh statements," Fico stressed.
Recall, Slovakia refuses to agree on a new package of sanctions against Russia. Bratislava demands from Brussels guarantees of the country's energy security in case of complete refusal The EU depends on Russian energy carriers. On July 10, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticized Fico for his position and demanded that Slovakia "stop resisting and open the way for the 18th package of measures."
