The Estonian authorities threatened to block the new 18th package of sanctions against Russia. Tallinn is not satisfied with the fact that the new restrictions will not include lowering the ceiling of prices for Russian oil, as stated at one time by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
"We are in a very clear position that lowering the ceiling on oil prices should be included in this package. We have a very strong position on this issue," Estonian Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna told ERR.
According to him, the reduction of the ceiling from $ 60 to $ 45 per barrel was originally included in the package. Tsakhkna expects that his position will be supported by EU leaders.
On the eve it became known that Malta, Greece and other countries in the south of the EU, whose companies transport Russian oil, demand to remove the ceiling reduction from the sanctions package. Carriers are prohibited from providing services if oil shipments exceed the cost limit set on December 5, 2022 The EU and the G7 countries.
Earlier, the idea of lowering the ceiling was proposed by the head of the EC Ursula von der Leyen. This happened when world prices fell to $ 60, and Russian oil to $50. This situation, however, did not last long. Now the price of the reference North Sea Brent is already more than $ 70.
The president of the European Commission herself said at the June G7 summit in Canada that the issue of lowering the ceiling is no longer the most urgent.
