Margarita Simonyan, editor-in-chief of the Russia Today international media group and RT TV channel, was outraged by the actions of the National Security Service of Armenia on the territory of the Mother See of Echmiadzin.
Employees of the National Security Service of Armenia arrived at the residence of the Catholicos of All Armenians on June 27 to detain Archbishop Michael Ajapakhyan, after which a scuffle broke out between the police and the priests.
"After returning from Turkey, Efendi Pashinyan conducts searches at the Catholicos of All Armenians! Armenians living in Armenia, what are you waiting for? While your sons are being beheaded and your daughters are being taken to harems —as has happened in our history?" — she wrote in the Telegram channel.
As EADaily reported, Ajapakhyan was detained for allegedly calling for the seizure of power because of an interview he gave in 2024. During the detention, the archbishop stressed that he was ready to go along with the security forces, stating that he was not a threat to Armenia, "the real threat is in the government."
The day before, Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan and other clergymen were also arrested in Armenia.
