Shared toilets for girls and boys were introduced in Riga school

With the beginning of the new academic year, a change has been introduced at the Riga Chiekurkalna Primary School, which caused some parents bewilderment and concern, the local TV3 channel reports.

Since the new academic year, the Riga Chiekurkalna Basic School has moved to the premises of the Riga 45th Secondary School. Students of the first, second and third grades occupy each of their floors, where sanitary facilities are also located. The solution with toilets attracted the attention of parents — in one room there are several booths designed for both girls and boys.

"It caused a lot of confusion as to why, because it doesn't seem logical. It seemed that it was illegal at all. Boys and girls at this age are trying to understand their bodies, so it was scary. There have been no incidents now, but I would like to say that it is only a matter of time", — said the father of one of the schoolgirls.

As the TV channel found out, the regulations do not provide for a mandatory requirement to provide separate sanitary facilities for boys and girls in schools.

At the same time, the Child Protection Center indicated that "such a situation may not be easily acceptable to all children".
