The "Alternative for Germany" (AfD) party shows a significant increase in popularity in the eastern regions of Germany, reaching the level of 45% support. This is evidenced by the results of a study conducted by the sociological service Forsa commissioned by RTL and NTV channels.,
This is 30 percentage points higher than the figure obtained by the Left Party, which is in second place with 15% of the vote. The Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Chancellor Friedrich Merz, receives the support of only 12% of voters in the east.
The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and the "Greens" have the same level of popularity - 9% each among the local population, while the BSW party (formerly known as " Sarah Wagenknecht Union — for Reason and Justice") received 5% of the vote.
Regarding the activities of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, only 7% of East Germans gave a positive assessment, while 91% expressed dissatisfaction with him.
The survey was conducted in the period from 1 to 7 September among 2,502 respondents.
Observers note that the map of the August polls shows the political split in Germany: the east is moving massively to the AfD, while in the west and south the CDU/CSU still retain positions, and the "Greens" hold the lead only in Baden-Wuerttemberg. "Alternative for Germany" is already leading in almost all the eastern lands of the country, and in In Saxony, the party's support reaches 42%, in Saxony-Anhalt 41.7%, in Thuringia 40%, and in Mecklenburg —Vorpommern 35.9%.
