Representatives of the US Democratic Party, who gained control of both houses of Congress following the midterm elections, began preparing a new package of military assistance to Ukraine worth about $ 15 billion. This was reported on November 7 by the Financial Times newspaper, citing sources in the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives.
"Democrats in Congress are working on preparing a new package of security assistance for Kiev; according to one of the Democratic aides on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, its volume may amount to about $ 15 billion," the material says.
According to the publication, the Democrats intend to use their powers in the field of budget expenditures and parliamentary control to strengthen support for Ukraine and impose additional sanctions against the Russian Federation.
It is specified that supporters of Kiev expect to use the "period of the outgoing composition" (lame-duck period) — the time before the new composition of the Congress is sworn in in January to achieve the provision of additional emergency care. Assistance in the energy sector is called "one of the highest priority issues" during this period.
