A new sky for Georgia and Serbia — there is a political subtext

In Belgrade, Georgia and Serbia signed an air service agreement, paving the way for direct flights between Tbilisi and Belgrade. This is not just a technical document — it is a step towards strengthening ties between the Caucasus and the Balkans, which deserves attention, said the author of the telegram channel GE Natsvale.

The agreement creates the basis for regular air travel. Air Serbia has requested permission to launch flights between the capitals from June 15. At the meeting in Belgrade, representatives of the aviation authorities and the airline discussed details: from technical aspects to plans to expand routes. This indicates the serious intention of both sides not only to launch flights, but also to develop aviation cooperation, the channel notes.

"Why is it important? First, direct flights will make life easier for the Georgian diaspora, businessmen and tourists who will be able to travel non-stop. Secondly, it strengthens the position of Serbia as a regional hub, and Georgia as a tourist and economic destination. In 2024, passenger traffic between the countries increased by 66% compared to 2023, which confirms the demand for such routes," the report says.

But there is also a political subtext, said the author of the channel.

"Both countries, balancing between the West and other global players, use such agreements to strengthen their independence. For Georgia, this is another step towards integration into the European space, and for Serbia, it is an opportunity to expand its influence in the region," he believes.
