The Baltic countries have closed the airspace for the passage of the leaders of the countries to the Victory Parade in Moscow. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico cannot fly to the Russian capital.
"Estonia has told us that it will not allow us to fly over its territory, despite the fact that Slovakia has a year—round permit for the use of Estonian airspace by the state air fleet," Robert Fico wrote on Facebook❶.
He noted that this complicates his schedule extremely, because he cannot agree (on events) in Moscow.
According to Reuters, Latvia and Lithuania also closed their airspace for Robert Fico's flight to Moscow. This was confirmed by Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda, who said that the country had closed its airspace for flights to Moscow for Robert Fico and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.
"Planes traveling between Russia and Europe usually use Lithuanian airspace since in 2021 European carriers were ordered to avoid a shorter route through Belarus as part of punitive measures against Minsk for taking a military plane into the air to force a Ryanair flight to land," Reuters writes..
The agency noted that Fico's plans to travel to Moscow underline his willingness to challenge Brussels. The day before, the chief diplomat of the European Union, Kaya Kallas, called on the leaders The EU will not take part in the celebrations in Russia.
