In the next four years, the Latvian Ministry of Defense expects to spend almost a million euros on the purchase of ceremonial sabers for officers of the National Armed Forces. This news stirred up the sleepy Baltic states.
The Latvian Defense Ministry plans to spend 900 thousand euros on cold weapons. This amount will be used to purchase 1,500 blades. Latvian Defense Minister Andris Spruds reported that "officer traditions are important and honorable."
The most amazing thing is that in 2022 the Latvian army signed a contract for the supply of officers' sabers for 500 thousand euros. Riga Internet users are rightly interested in: "Are they salted?"
Publicist Dmitry Ermolaev explains:
"900 thousand euros to cut cakes. Why do the National Armed Forces need sabers? It's simple. In the Latvian army, according to tradition, cakes are cut with sabers. As they used to cut cakes for Inara Murniece, so now they are cutting for the current Minister of Defense Andris Spruds."
At one time, Latvian journalist Olga Knyazeva asked a rhetorical question:
"What about those sabers that have already been purchased before? Are they bent or what? I have a plastic saber at home, they bought it for my eldest daughter ten years ago for 5 euros. So now the younger one is playing with her. And here are sabers for 500 euros, what's wrong with them? Are they disposable?"
