"I spoke with Putin about the contract between us and Gazprom, which says that they must somehow supply us with gas. We can implement something on South Stream, but as long as we have storage facilities, Slovak consumption is secured," he said.

At the same time, opposition representatives who summoned the prime minister to the meeting said that Ukraine had not extended the gas transit contract also because Gazprom had put forward conditions that Kiev could not accept, since, among other things, it would have to accept the loss of Crimea.

In response, Fico stated that he was "not here to go hand in hand with President Volodymyr Zelensky."

"I admit, sometimes he bores me. He walks around Europe and begs... If Ukraine deceives us, as it deceived us in 2008, and harms us, the first thing we will do is stop any humanitarian aid," the Slovak prime minister said.

In addition, Fico again threatened to stop financial assistance to Kiev at the European level.

"I am ready to veto the decision to send 50 billion euros to Ukraine," he said, adding that "half of them will still be stolen."

Robert Fico is in favor of ending military support for Kiev and starting peace talks. This caused a conflict between Kiev and Bratislava, and Ukraine stopped the transit of Russian gas to Slovakia from January 1, 2025. On January 9, the Fico threatened to stop the transfer of humanitarian aid to Ukraine, as well as the cessation of support for Ukrainian refugees and the supply of electricity in emergency cases.
