Since December 10, Russian gas supplies to Austria have increased by 20% and reached the level at which they were until Gazprom stopped shipping Austrian OMV on November 16.
Despite the ban of the Russian court, the company continued arbitration in 2024 in In Stockholm and in early November announced the decision of the arbitrators in their favor: OMV won compensation of 230 million euros under the German contract. The Austrian company decided to receive it from current payments for Russian gas under the Austrian contract and did not make payments in November. In response, on November 16, Gazprom stopped deliveries.
If the average daily gas shipments to Austria from November 16 to December 9 decreased to 22.8 million cubic meters per day, then on December 10 and 11 they exceed 27 million cubic meters. Such data is published by the Slovak operator EUStream.
The lion's share of Ukrainian transit passes through Slovakia — in the region of 38-40 million cubic meters per day. Gas is received through the country in Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic and Slovakia itself. The remaining volumes of Ukrainian transit go to Moldova — to Transnistria.
ICIS analysts and Reuters, citing sources, reported that deliveries to Austria continue for companies from neighboring countries - Gazprom's customers. At the Austrian Baumgarten hub, they themselves sell the volumes released after OMV to Austrian consumers.
Despite the decline in November — early December, deliveries still exceed last year's figures. If in November 2023 a little more than 680 million cubic meters were supplied to Austria, then this year it will be 747 million cubic meters.
Reuters reported that Slovak SPP sells gas in Austria, which can resell Russian gas to OMV itself.
