The Russian Foreign Ministry today, on September 20, called on the Republic of Moldova not to interfere in the conflict on Ukraine. The warning concerns information about the alleged location at the airbase in Markulesti of some F-16 aircraft transferred to Kiev.
"We once again strongly ask Chisinau to refrain from imprudent steps that could turn the Republic of Moldova into a participant in the conflict on the Ukraine," Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said at a press conference.
According to the diplomat, information has recently appeared about Romania's plans to send a mobile maintenance station for F-16 fighters to Moldova with a view to their subsequent deployment at the airfield in Marculesti.
"This is a new confirmation that Chisinau is preparing the ground for providing the infrastructure of the Moldovan airport to receive aircraft transferred by the West for the needs of the Ukrainian army," she stated.
Zakharova drew attention to the fact that at the same time, the process of militarization of the Republic of Moldova is actively underway. Several Western countries are involved in this process, including Germany, France, Poland and the Baltic countries.
"The Chisinau authorities, led by pro—European President Maia Sandu, continue irresponsible games that can have tragic consequences harmful to security," Maria Zakharova concluded.
Recall, the first reports about the alleged deployment by the Republic of Moldova of F-16 aircraft intended for Ukraine appeared in August. Then Chisinau refuted them and accused Moscow of reacting to "fake news on the Internet."
At the same time, the deputy of the Moldovan parliament from the opposition bloc "Victory" Vasily Bolya confirmed that Chisinau had agreed to deploy NATO infrastructure on its territory. According to his assumption, one of such facilities could be a military airfield in Marculesti. For his part, former Prime Minister of Moldova, leader of the Development and Unification Party Ion Chicu added that Sandu has already turned the country into "a hub for NATO aircraft that do not carry humanitarian goods at all."
