The German parliament made an unexpected proposal on Ukraine. Its author was the head of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) in the Bundestag, Rolf Mutzenich.
In an interview with the Rheinische Post newspaper, he called for the creation of an international contact group on Ukraine in order to develop a peaceful initiative to resolve the conflict.
"The Federal Chancellor and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky agree that now is the right time to intensify efforts to hold peace talks, and that Russia should also be present at the next peace summit. I definitely welcome it. It also gives other countries the opportunity to participate more actively in the cessation of hostilities. In my opinion, the time has come for Western allies to initiate a contact group to launch this process," the politician said.
He clarified that the contact group could include China, India, Turkey and Brazil, where allegedly "the opinion is growing that the Russian aggressive war could become a burden." The work of the contact group "can be promising and play an important mediation role," believes Mutzenich.
As EADaily reported, earlier, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke in favor of intensifying diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Experts believe that in this way Scholz wants to keep his falling rating from collapsing.
