In Dresden, one of the most important bridges over the Elbe partially collapsed.
There were no casualties, although a tram had passed through the crossing just 18 minutes earlier. Now the site is about 100 meters long and lies in Elbe and blocks the riverbed. As stated by the emergency services of the city, other parts of the bridge are also under serious threat of collapse. According to the reporter of Central German Radio, the second segment of the bridge is also sagging.
It is not yet known whether the collapse is related to the repair work that was carried out on the bridge, and if so, to what extent.
"It was impossible to foresee that the condition of the bridge was so bad that it collapsed," commented Holger Kalbe, head of the Dresden Road and Civil Engineering department.
