At least two people have died and more than two dozen have been hospitalized in the United States as a result of an outbreak of listeria food poisoning linked to meat sliced on grocery store shelves. This is reported by US News with reference to federal health officials.
"According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 28 people in a dozen states have fallen ill, although the largest number, seven, was in New York. The dead were from Illinois and New Jersey. The samples were taken from May 29 to July 5, and at the moment all the people known about ... are hospitalized," the portal reports.
Many of the victims, they said, ate meat that was sliced on the shelves of grocery stores. According to official data, the victims most often reported that they ate sliced turkey, liver sausage and ham. The CDC does not have enough information to say which meat delicacies are the source of the outbreak.
This outbreak covers people between the ages of 32 and 94, with an average age of 75.
Infections caused by listeria usually cause fever, muscle aches and fatigue, and can also cause neck muscle stiffness, confusion, loss of balance and seizures. Symptoms may appear quickly or up to 10 weeks after eating contaminated food. Infections are especially dangerous for people over the age of 65, people with weakened immune systems and pregnant women who may have miscarriages.
A deadly infection from the United States will not reach Russia, said Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Onishchenko.
"The outbreak of listeriosis will not reach Russia. It is caused by a single product or a number of food products. Mr. Biden did his best and severed all ties with Russia. We used to have trade with the United States, and the Americans and I ate the same foods. And now it's not," Onishchenko said, as quoted by the telegram channel Pool No. 3.
