The recognized master of Russian cinema is making a film based on Tchaikovsky's symphony

Director and screenwriter, People's Artist of Russia Alexander Sokurov is working on a film based on Symphony No. 5 by Pyotr Tchaikovsky. He said this in an interview with the Forbes portal, which is available on YouTube.

"Our outstanding conductor Theodor Currentzis has recorded a new version of the performance of this work. I have never heard such a Tchaikovsky. And I never thought that Tchaikovsky had so much energy, energy inside," Sokurov said, adding that he really wanted to make a fantasy on this topic.

Assistance in the implementation of the project is provided by the State Hermitage Museum, various military museums and libraries of St. Petersburg, Pushkin House.

"The archive is very large in the way of life in the XIX century, but Tchaikovsky is the XIX century. And we would like to show in this film what kind of fabric this amazing unique art grew out of. It's not just Tchaikovsky, it's Rachmaninoff (Sergei), and our whole "Mighty Bunch", and the whole symphonic culture," the cinematographer emphasized.

According to him, in the future film there will be documentary, maybe game elements, combined. The filming period of the project is already underway, there will be filming at the Kirov plant, as well as shooting the orchestra through about 40 cameras.

"I haven't done this yet, I want to try it," Sokurov admitted.

He noted that any film is an economy, there is a budget, but it is "on paper." It is planned to finish work on the project in February 2027.

As EADaily reported, earlier, on the day of his 75th birthday, which was celebrated on June 14, Sokurov published a letter to the actor and director, People's Artist of the RSFSR, chairman of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia Nikita Mikhalkov, which was handed over during the premiere of his film "Director's Notebook" at the MIFF to the program director of the screening Ivan Kudryavtsev.

In the letter itself, Sokurov first of all thanked the MIFF for the opportunity to show his film "Director's Notebook". Further, the director recalls that in the last few years his paintings have been facing "censorship bans." He also attached a list of 37 films that could not get a rental certificate, or it was withdrawn after the approval of the release of films for rental, or a rental certificate was issued without the right to rent. In particular, there are two Sokurov paintings on the list — "The Russian Ark" (2016) and a new version of the film "The Sun" (2005).

Mikhalkov suggested forwarding the letter "to someone who runs the state."
