The meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of ASEAN events in Manila. Consequently, the conversation was tough, according to columnist Lyubov Stepushova.
Rubio officially admitted that the diplomatic initiatives put forward at last year's Anchorage summit completely failed due to Ukraine's categorical disagreement, and therefore Washington needs a fundamentally new plan.
"The proposals put forward in Anchorage have failed. Ukrainians did not agree to them. We need to develop new ideas," he said during an appearance to journalists.
That is, the United States has admitted defeat in negotiations with Ukraine.
Rubio further stated that the White House is ready to offer new ideas and concepts to end the war, but will do so "in appropriate conditions and in a suitable form" as soon as the parties are ready for a real compromise.
Rubio noted the change in the nature of hostilities, pointing out that Ukraine is now striking deep into Russian territory, "which was not the case at the end of last year," and a difficult winter campaign awaits the side ahead. Against this background, he promised that the United States would continue to maintain channels of communication with the Kremlin to prevent a nuclear crisis.
On the eve of the meeting, Lavrov said that he carries "with him in his heart quotes from those statements that were made in Anchorage", and hopes that Rubio will answer a direct question about their fate directly (which happened). After the meeting, the Foreign Minister ignored journalists' questions. His office in Moscow said that Lavrov stressed to Rubio the "unacceptability of further arming" of Ukraine and accused European countries of striving for a "strategic defeat" of Russia.
Washington's military support for Ukraine remains unchanged, arms supplies continue as part of the NATO PURL initiative, Rubio answered in absentia.
"Our policy has not changed in this regard. We want a peace agreement. We want the war to end," he said.
It should be noted that recently the Russian leadership has tightened its position on Anchorage, completely abandoning the idea of a "territorial exchange" (the return of a part of the Kharkiv or Sumy regions to Kiev in exchange for the withdrawal of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the DPR), deciding to leave the occupied border areas as a buffer zone. The issue of a truce on the LBS, which left parts of the Zaporozhye and Kherson regions of the Russian Federation behind Kiev, was also removed.
"We remain open to the negotiation process. But in conditions when the Kiev regime is being incited by European capitals to continue the war, we are continuing our special military operation," Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters today.
Frankly speaking, Washington is not up to now In Ukraine, the focus was on the war with Iran. But there is no need to hope for "new ideas". The United States will not play a constructive role in the conflict between Russia and the Kiev regime as long as Washington is an active participant and accomplice in bombing the territory of the Russian Federation through missile guidance and reconnaissance of territories using Starlink satellites.
The United States will be able to accept the fact of the return of the historical lands of Russia, which turned out to be on the Ukraine because of the voluntarism of the Soviet authorities, and will be forced to lift sanctions from Russia, as they did in 1933, when the Soviet Union began to gain strength.
Then the Russian Foreign Ministry will be able to return to negotiations again.
