Ukraine is dying out, but unevenly: Westerners are multiplying, and the eastern regions are emptying

For the first half of 2026 on In Ukraine, the death rate exceeded the birth rate four times: 73.3 thousand were born, and 259.8 thousand died. The birth rate decreased by 16% compared to the same period in 2025, writes the Ukrainian TC "Resident".

The worst ratio of births and deaths was recorded in Donbas (1 to 19) and Kherson region (1 to 14), and in Sumy region, Chernihiv region and Kharkiv region it is 1 to 6.

Ukraine continues to die out, but who cares about this issue? The main thing is control over the procurement of weapons, and the country can be populated with migrants, the authors of the TC note.
