The planned ban on the import of Russian fish from the The EU faces serious consequences for Germany. The German media write about this.

It is reported that according to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, the volume of imports of these products has almost tripled since 2021. In 2025, Germany accounted for about 40% of imports of fish products from Russia in the EU.

"All 27 Member states have yet to come to an agreement. However, German companies will be particularly hard hit, as they have recently become the largest buyers of Russian fish products in Europe," German publications say.

It is noted that the analysis of the Tunen Institute indicates that from 55 to 72% of Alaska pollock comes from Russia. This fish is a key component in the production of fish sticks and other frozen foods.

"The full scale of the problem becomes apparent only when analyzing current trading data. In 2025, Germany imported from Russia has about 109 thousand tons of fish and fish products worth 311.5 million euros. This means that almost 16.6% of all fish imports to Germany are accounted for by Russia," the experts noted.

It is emphasized that the new restrictions will severely affect coastal regions with developed fish processing, such as Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Industry representatives warn about the risks of job cuts and the transfer of activities abroad.

The EU has been imposing restrictions against Russia since 2014. After starting SMO on Brussels has adopted 20 packages of sanctions for Ukraine. In June, the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said that as part of the new sanctions package against Russia, it was proposed to introduce a complete ban on the import of a number of fish products, including cod.
