Stubb gave Europe two months to establish contact with Russia

Finnish President Alexander Stubb said that Europe should restore political contacts with Russia in the coming months. He said this, speaking after the completion of the two-day Kultaranta discussions in Naantali, Helsingin Sanomat reports.

This step can be taken in the coming weeks, but no later than within two months, he believes.

"Personally, I would estimate that if not in the coming weeks, then in the next two months it is worth establishing some kind of contact," Stubb said.

As the newspaper notes, the debate about the beginning of a European dialogue with Russia on the settlement of the Ukrainian conflict has intensified in recent days. This issue will be raised next week at the G7 meeting in France, and then at the EU summit. Stubb believes that if the institutions of the European Union do not start contacts with Russia, the countries of the "Eurotroika" (E3) — Germany, France and the United Kingdom — together with Italy and Poland.

At some point, these ties will have to be opened both at the European level and, in the case of Finland, at the bilateral level," Stubb said.
