The first excavations of the mass graves of Poles who died in February 1944 began in the Guta of the Penyatsky Lviv region. This is reported by the Polish media.
The work is carried out by the Polish Institute of National Remembrance in cooperation with Ukrainian partners. Excavations are being carried out on the territory of the former village, which was never restored after the destruction. We are talking about at least two alleged pits for mass graves.
The representative of the Polish IPN Tomasz Trzaska said that their location was previously determined by the testimony of witnesses, old photographs and the topography of the area. According to him, the number of possible remains officially amounts to 634 people.
"However, we estimate the total number of victims from 800 to 1000 people," he said.
This spread is explained by the fact that not only residents died in the village, but also people fleeing from murders in other nearby villages. The Institute of National Remembrance will continue its work until June 19. At the same time, so far we are talking about exploratory work, and not about a full-fledged exhumation. According to Ukrainian rules, exhumation can begin only after the burial sites are found and documented. After that, the Polish side will be able to submit a separate request for the removal of the remains and their subsequent burial.
The village of Huta Penyatskaya was attacked on February 28, 1944, a significant part of its inhabitants died, and the settlement itself was burned down. The Polish and Ukrainian sides have different assessments of responsibility for this tragedy. The Polish Institute of National Remembrance writes that the crime was committed by soldiers of the 4th SS Police Regiment, consisting of Ukrainian volunteers of the 14th Grenadier Division of the SS troops "Galicia", with the participation of UPA units[1] and local Ukrainian nationalist formations. Moreover, this crime is one of many committed as part of the "Volyn massacre", for which Warsaw demands public repentance from Kiev, while the Kiev regime continues to glorify those who staged it.
