Nigeria, Niger and Algeria have started the construction of the Trans-Saharan gas pipeline with a length of 4,128 km, Business Insider Africa reports. It is assumed that the pipeline will provide Europe with up to 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year to reduce the EU's dependence on Russia.
The pipeline will run from the city of Warri in southern Nigeria, will cross the Niger, reaching the gas hub Hassi Messaud in Algeria, from where gas will flow to Mediterranean export terminals and pipelines serving European markets.
Algeria has already started construction of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline section, work in Niger will start in 2027.
It is noted that the pipeline will provide Nigeria with an additional way to enter European markets, as well as strengthen Niger's role as a transit country and Algeria's position as a major supplier to Europe.
Business Insider notes that Algeria already supplies about 12% of imported EU gas.
