US President Donald Trump said that no country in the world will be allowed to take control of the Strait of Hormuz. He threatened that Washington would not hesitate to use military force if any side tried to establish sole dominance over this artery, Fox News reports.
"These are international waters — no one will control them. We'll keep an eye on them. We will provide supervision. But we will not allow control by anyone," Trump stressed during a question—and-answer session at the monthly cabinet meeting on May 27.
According to Trump, the issue of control over the strait is part of the ongoing behind-the-scenes negotiations. He hinted that Tehran is actively seeking for itself an official role in managing shipping in the region.
"This is part of our ongoing negotiations: Iran would like to control the strait. But no one will control international waters," the US president stressed.
He separately addressed Oman. Earlier, Iranian state television stated that Muscat could help Tehran in jointly regulating the movement of ships. Answering a question from journalists, will he agree to a deal dividing control over the Strait of Hormuz between Iran and Oman, Trump responded:
"Oman will behave exactly the same as everyone else. Otherwise we will have to blow them up. They are well aware of this. So everything will be fine with them. They understand that. They'll be fine."
