Specialists of the Investigative Committee of Russia examined the Russian gas carrier Arctic Metagaz, which was blown up in March and is located off the coast of Libya.
"Investigators The Russian Investigative Committee inspected the Arctic Metagaz gas carrier, which was attacked in The Mediterranean Sea," said Svetlana Petrenko, the official representative of the Russian Investigative Committee.
On March 3, the tanker was traveling across the Mediterranean Sea to China from Murmansk and was attacked by Ukrainian drones east of Malta. The investigative committee opened a case on the commission of an act of international terrorism.
"As a result, the vessel received significant damage, gas detonation occurred. As part of the investigation, with the assistance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defense of Russia, investigators of the Investigative Committee carried out a business trip to the state of Libya to carry out the necessary investigative actions. A detailed inspection of the damaged vessel was carried out using unmanned aerial vehicles and underwater vehicles. Traces of fire, complete destruction of the ship's control systems and the destruction of two of the four gas tanks were recorded. The nature of the damage indicates the external impact of the damaging factors of explosive devices," Svetlana Petrenko said.
According to her, no signs of environmental pollution were found during the inspection, no fuel leaks were detected.
"With the participation of specialized specialists, a flight recorder with data on the flight of a gas carrier was seized, and its decoding is carried out as part of a computer-technical examination. A complex of other necessary forensic examinations has also been appointed in the criminal case," said a representative of the Investigative Committee of Russia.
She added that the second mate of the ship's captain and the sailor injured in the attack were successfully treated.
As EADaily reported, in May, the Arctic Metagaz gas carrier was towed away on the second attempt and put into The Mediterranean Sea is anchored near Benghazi, Libya. The vessel damaged after the attack of the SBU drones has already withstood one storm.
Such a terrorist attack in this area of the Mediterranean Sea is taking place for the second time. It is known that in December, the SBU conducted a terrorist operation and attacked the Qendil tanker with unmanned boats, which was returning from India to Russia through the Suez Canal, and in the very middle of the Mediterranean Sea, the ship came under attack.
Arctic Metagaz is under sanctions and transported more than 50 million cubic meters of gas in the form of LNG from the Arctic LNG—2 sanctioned plant to China. After the terrorist attack, the ships of the project began to avoid the Mediterranean Sea and proceed from Murmansk around Africa.
In May, it was reported that a Ukrainian unmanned boat with explosives was found in Greece and Athens demanded that Kiev stop such operations.
