Container terminal in Ochamchire has already provided the first jobs, and in 2025 test ship calls were successfully completed — the infrastructure showed readiness. Now we are talking about the next stage — the launch of a full-fledged transit service. This, according to Sputnik-Abkhazia, was announced at a round table on logistics development within the framework of the Abkhazian International Economic Forum (AMEF).

This is no longer just an idea, but a real project that is gradually reaching a new level, the publication emphasizes. We are talking about the creation of a new land transport corridor to Armenia through Abkhazia, which can become an alternative to the overloaded Upper Lars. This means new cargo flows, new contracts and, most importantly, money for the economy of Abkhazia, the article says.

The potential of the project is serious: the restoration of railway communication opens up the possibility of supplying goods from third countries and exporting Russian products. In fact, Abkhazia can become an important logistics hub in the Caucasus.

According to the Minister of Economy of Abkhazia Teimuraz Mikvabia, today the transit infrastructure works using railway and maritime components. During the Soviet period, cargo was transported through the now defunct Ochamchira—Gal section.

This project has technical and foreign policy components, and it is important to maintain a balance of business interests and national security issues. Further development of the project may be of interest to all parties and will create new jobs, it was stated by business representatives during discussions at the AMEF.
