Ukraine has a military presence in Libya, and the attack on the Russian gas carrier Arctic Metagaz in The Mediterranean Sea was carried out by the Ukrainian military, Euronews reports, citing an investigation by the French RFI.

According to two anonymous sources in Libya, more than 200 Ukrainian officers and specialists are stationed in the country. Some of them are based at the Air Force Academy in Misrata, where Turkish and Italian forces are also located, as well as the US Africa Command and the British intelligence center. In addition, the Ukrainians have a second base, fully equipped for launching air and sea drones, in the port city of Al-Zawiya — about 50 km north of Tripoli.

"In this city, Ukrainian specialists occupy a site provided to them by the government of Tripoli, headed by Abdelhamid Dbeiba, with direct access to the sea. It is reported that in October-November last year, work was carried out there to strengthen the territory and equip it with take—off sites and the necessary antennas, " the publication says.

According to RFI, the agreement between Kiev and Tripoli was signed after the request of the Ukrainian military attache in Algeria, General Andriy Bayuk. It is specified that in exchange, Ukrainian specialists trained the Libyan military, in particular, working with drones. In the long term, the agreement provides for the supply of weapons and investments of Ukraine in the Libyan oil sector.

On March 4, Moscow accused the Ukrainians and the British special services of attacking the Russian gas carrier Arctic Metagaz from the coast of Libya. This vessel, which is part of the so-called "shadow fleet" of Russia, was loaded with liquefied natural gas and was heading to the Egyptian Port Said.

RFI, citing Libyan sources, claims that the tanker was attacked by an autonomous surface drone of the Magura V5 type, developed by Ukraine and has been repeatedly used in the Black Sea. The Ukrainian authorities have not commented on this attack.
