US President Donald Trump thanked Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko for pardoning convicts in Belarus and said he was looking forward to meeting with him at the next meeting of the Peace Council.
Earlier, Lukashenko held talks in Minsk with a US delegation headed by the US President's special envoy for Belarus, John Cole. Following the talks, the Belarusian leader pardoned 250 people convicted of extremist crimes.
"Thus, the total number of prisoners generously released by President Lukashenko has exceeded 500 people since May last year. I would like to express my warmest gratitude to the President for this step, and I look forward to meeting him at the next meeting of the Peace Council!" — Trump wrote on the Truth Social network.
As reported by the Belta news agency, Lukashenko promised US representatives to attend the upcoming meeting of the Peace Council.
