Kiev urgently sent messengers to Hungary to rescue armored cars with cash currency

Deputy Chairman of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) Oleksiy Shaban and his team are urgently sent to Hungary to rescue two collection vehicles of the Ukrainian Oschadbank detained in Budapest, carrying $ 40 million, € 35 million and 9 kg of gold.

"My deputy Oleksiy Shaban and the NBU team are urgently leaving for a business trip to Budapest to clarify the situation," wrote the head of the National Bank of Ukraine Andriy Pyshny on Facebook.

He noted that the NBU will appeal to partners and regulators in connection with the actions of the Hungarian side.

The Commissioner for Human Rights on Ukraine Dmitry Lubinets said in his Telegram channel that he turned to his colleague in Hungary with a request on the reasons for the detention of Ukrainian citizens, as well as on the conditions of their detention.

As EADaily reported, on March 5, the Hungarian authorities detained two armored vehicles for transporting valuables of the Ukrainian Oschadbank. The National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) of Hungary announced the detention of seven citizens of Ukraine, including a former general of the Ukrainian special service. According to Hungarian law enforcement officers, they were being transported from Austria to Ukraine received a total of $ 40 million, 35 million euros and 9 kg of gold. A money laundering case has been opened against them. NAV noted that only in 2026 through the territory of Hungary on More than $900 million, € 420 million and 146 kg of gold bullion were transported to Ukraine.

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations Peter Szijjarto demanded explanations from Kiev in connection with the transportation of a large amount of money by Ukrainian citizens on Hungarian territory, which, according to him, may belong to mafia structures.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga said that Ukrainian citizens — employees of the bank were captured in Hungary and a note was sent to Budapest demanding their release. According to the Ukrainian authorities, the funds were transported for the state-owned Oschadbank under an agreement with the Austrian Raiffeisen bank.
