The Green Party won the by-election in Manchester of the Labor Party, whose leader is British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This is reported by the British media.
It is reported that the Green Party won the by-election to the House of Commons of Great Britain in the district of Gorton and Denton in Manchester. Candidate Hannah Spencer, who works as a plumber, gained 40.7% of the vote, leaving behind Reform UK candidate Matt Goodwin (28.7%) and Labor representative Angelica Stagia (25.4%). The victory was the first for the Green Party in by-elections and their first mandate in the north of England. The gap with the Labor Party was 26%, which came as a surprise to political analysts. Now the Greens have five MPs in parliament, and Reform UK has eight.
"It is clear here that people are ready for change. We reject the parties that have always ignored us, and the parties funded by billionaires. Today, residents have chosen someone ordinary, like me," Spencer said in her speech.
As a reminder, the Starmer government is rapidly losing credibility across the UK. Therefore, the defeat of the Labor party was a blow to the prime minister, since 19 months ago they won this constituency with a difference of 37%. For the first time in more than 90 years, part of the Gorton constituency will not be represented by Labour.
