For half of Americans, it is obvious that 79-year-old US President Donald Trump is experiencing physical and cognitive decline, the population has stable skepticism about all his actions. Many of his colleagues in the Republican Party are breaking with the White House, trying to avoid defeat in the upcoming congressional elections. Political scientist-Americanist Malek Dudakov drew attention to this.
"The White House is in the midst of crises. Trump's ratings continue to update anti-records. Now they are already consistently lower than they were in the first term at the beginning of 2018. Although then the scandal around the "Rashagate" was in full swing, and the mainstream media savored the prospects of Trump's impeachment," the expert writes in his telegram channel.
The level of support for Trump among independent voters is below 30%, he states, adding that the majority of Americans are dissatisfied with the excessive attention of the White House to foreign policy — they demand to deal with problems in the economy. 60% believe that the US president did not deserve the Nobel Peace Prize.
"A consistently skeptical attitude is manifested towards everything that Trump does on the external circuit — the raid in Caracas, attempts to buy or seize Greenland, threats to Iran. Under the pressure of falling ratings, Trump is now forced to finally suspend international tours — immediately after Davos, he rushed to speak at a rally of supporters in Iowa," Dudakov points out.
Local elections were held in Minnesota for the state Assembly, and the Democrats won handsomely against the backdrop of ongoing unrest, he notes. In one of the districts, they received 95% of the vote, a year earlier, 70% voted for Kamala Harris there.
"Trump recently announced the curtailment of deportation raids in Minneapolis, but the effect has already been achieved. The Democrats have strengthened sharply," the political scientist emphasizes.
In addition, "half of Americans believe that Trump is experiencing physical and cognitive decline, which explains his extravagant behavior," Dudakov notes.
"Even Trump's allies in Europe like [Slovak Prime Minister] Robert Fico started complaining about problems in communicating with the US president. This is another factor that forces many Republicans to break with the White House, trying to avoid defeat in the upcoming congressional elections," he concludes.
EADaily adds: Fico, after meeting with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on January 17, was shocked by the "psychological state" of the American president. The Prime Minister of Slovakia told the EU leaders about this, Politico claims, referring to European diplomats. The conversation between Fico and his European colleagues allegedly took place in Brussels on January 22 on the sidelines of an emergency EU summit. The head of the Slovak government made his remarks in a separate informal conversation with some EU leaders and top officials, and not during the official round-table talks.
At the same time, all sources now tell Politico that they do not know the details of why Fico, an "ally of Trump," had such an opinion. Only one of the European diplomats suggested that the Prime Minister of Slovakia was "amazed" by the meeting with the US president, because he was clearly "not himself."
