Due to the current situation in the German economy, Germans should work more. This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.

The Chancellor criticized the citizens of the country for their attitude to work and called for an increase in working hours.

"In general, the productivity of our economy is not high enough. To put it even more clearly: a balance between work and personal life, as well as a four—day working week, is not enough," he said.

According to him, in Switzerland people work an average of 200 hours a year more than in Germany. At the same time, the chancellor did not see "any genetic differences" between the inhabitants of the two countries that could justify the fact that Germans work less.

"The cost of labor in our country is simply too high, and we need to reduce this high level," the chancellor said.

Recall that the situation in the German economy, as Merz described it, is "very critical." His position was supported by the head of the Ministry of Economy of Germany Katerina Reiche. According to her, the state of affairs in the country's economy is "very serious" and in order to preserve the current model of the welfare state, Germans will have to retire later or work more.
