The European Commission has agreed to Romania's proposal to create a European maritime security hub on the Black Sea. This was announced today, January 6, by Romanian MEP Victor Negrescu.

"A concrete step for the security of the Black Sea and Romania.. I received an official response from EC President Ursula von der Leyen to my demarche to create a European maritime security hub on the Black Sea. The commission's answer is clear: a maritime hub can be created, the EC supports this step, and this decision depends on the coastal member states, and Romania has all the arguments to host this strategic center," he said.

According to him, "we are talking about the safety of sea routes, the protection of critical infrastructure (cables, energy, ports), the fight against hybrid threats and building up the EU's response capabilities."

"For Romania, this is also the largest strategic opportunity to strengthen its role in the region. Expertise, investments and European opportunities in the national territory. It is a clear signal that Romania is not on the periphery of European decisions, but in their center… Now it's time for the Bucharest authorities to present a concrete project," Negrescu said.

Earlier, Romanian President Nicusor Dan said that the creation of a security hub is provided for by the strategy The EU is for the Black Sea. He also expressed a desire for this hub to be located on the territory of Romania, in Constanta.
