Talk of a possible US annexation of Greenland creates unnecessary danger and undermines military cooperation between Washington and Copenhagen. This was stated by Democratic Congressman Steny Hoyer and his Republican colleague Blake Moore.
"Sabre-rattling over the annexation of Greenland creates unnecessary danger. The Kingdom of Denmark is a NATO ally and one of America's closest partners. An attack on Greenland — an extremely important part of this alliance — would, alas, be an attack on NATO," the congressmen said in a joint statement published on Hoyer's website.
In their opinion, Denmark is aware of the importance of Greenland for the security of both countries in The Arctic region. In this regard, politicians emphasize that Copenhagen has been cooperating with the United States on the island for decades, agreeing to all Washington's demands to increase its military presence and increasing military spending to 3.3% of GDP.
"If our message is 'we need Greenland,' then in fact we already have access to everything we could need from Greenland. If we want to deploy more forces in Greenland or create additional missile defense infrastructure, Denmark has already given us permission to do so. Our ally has always met us halfway. Threats to annex Greenland unnecessarily undermine this cooperation for nothing," the statement emphasizes.
Congressmen noted that "only the civil war between NATO members of the United States was not enough now."
Recall, US President Donald Trump after surgery in Venezuela said on January 4 in an interview with Atlantic magazine that Washington also needs Greenland due to the fact that the Danish island is allegedly surrounded by ships of China and Russia. In addition, the wife of the deputy head of the White House administration Stephen Miller, Katie, posted on the social network X an image with a map of Greenland painted in the colors of the American flag, with the caption "coming soon." After that, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen called on Trump to stop threatening Greenland to join the States.
